Gourd Creations

The possibilities in creating gourd art are endless and I enjoy exploring new techniques and revealing ideas.  Much of my inspiration comes from the natural world, which fits well with this organic type of art.  Carving is done through a variety of techniques which are equally challenging and rewarding.  Pieces that are open to any degree are sanded and finished inside and all edges are hand-filed or sanded.

I use a variety of stains and dyes and often incorporate the natural coloration of the pieces.  Various finishes bring out the natural patterns and colors and add protection.  Gourd art that is not exposed to moisture or excessive sunlight can last indefinitely.

Saving Lives Through
Groovy Gourds

I create carved gourd art not only for the wonderful joy I receive in producing fine art, but to feed starving children throughout the world.  How does Groovy Gourds do that?

When an art piece sells, for every dollar spent, one child is fed for one day through Feed My Starving Children (FMSC).  FMSC is a non-profit Christian organization committed to "Feeding God's Starving Children Hungry in Body and Spirit".

Tools of the Trade

I enjoy carving with small tools.  Of various power tools I've tried, those from Proxxon perform quite well and I've been very pleased.  They're lightweight and very well balanced.  They allow me to be creative and to think about the art piece I'm carving instead of the tool in my hand.
Other tools I use include a variety of knives, chisels, and files; handmade scrapers; a bone saw; and even glass shards.
